Historic Margin: Germany’s 5-1 Win Sets Record for Largest Opening Match Victory in Euro Championships

Germany's emphatic win sets a strong tone as they aim for a record fourth continental title in Euro 2024.

Germany made a resounding start to Euro 2024 as they thrashed Scotland 5-1 in the tournament’s opening match at Munich’s Allianz Arena on Friday. The victory marked both the largest-ever win for a host nation in European Championships history and the biggest margin of victory in an opening match of the tournament.

Florian Wirtz opened the scoring in the 10th minute, swiftly followed by Jamal Musiala doubling Germany’s lead just nine minutes later. Scotland’s hopes were further dashed before halftime when Ryan Porteous received a red card for a two-footed challenge on Ilkay Gundogan, resulting in Kai Havertz converting a penalty.

Substitute Niclas Fullkrug extended Germany’s lead in the second half, and despite a late own goal by Antonio Ruediger, Emre Can sealed the victory with Germany’s fifth goal in stoppage time.

Scotland’s disappointing night was compounded by Porteous’s red card and an inability to contain Germany’s attacking prowess, led by coach Julian Nagelsmann in his Euros debut.

The Euro 2024 opener showcased Germany’s ambition to clinch a record fourth continental title, setting an exhilarating tone for the tournament ahead.
