Ford Announces Job Reductions at Valencia Facility Amidst Production Shifts

Madrid: Ford, the American automotive giant, has disclosed plans to reduce its workforce by up to 1,600 positions at its Valencia assembly plant in Spain. This announcement comes on the heels of a previous staff reduction of 1,100 last year.

Currently, the Valencia factory’s workforce stands at approximately 4,700. Ford communicated to unions its intention to permanently cut 600 jobs. However, discussions are open regarding the potential rehiring of the remaining 1,000 employees in anticipation of increased production starting in 2027, as stated by a Ford spokesperson in Spain.

The spokesperson suggested that “a temporary solution could be negotiated for (the other) 1,000 to bridge the time until production of the new vehicle starts.”

In recent developments, Ford revealed plans last month to commence production of a new hybrid passenger car at the Almussafes-based facility, targeting both European markets and beyond from 2027. The company’s goal is to manufacture 300,000 units of this new model annually, as reported by Spain’s Industry Ministry.

Currently, the Valencia plant is dedicated to assembling Ford’s Kuga compact sports utility vehicle following the discontinuation of other models over recent years.

This latest round of job cuts represents the second such initiative by Ford within a two-year span, reflecting ongoing adjustments within the company’s global manufacturing strategy.
