Beni, DR Congo: In a tragic overnight assault, suspected Islamist rebels claimed the lives of at least 10 individuals in a village located in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, as reported by a local official and a civil society leader on Saturday.
The village of Masala in Beni territory, situated in North Kivu province, fell under attack by armed assailants overnight on Friday, according to military administrator Charles Euta Omeonga, who conveyed the details to Reuters via phone.
Civil society leader Justin Kavalami attributed the attack to members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), the same group accused by a local official of perpetrating another assault on a village earlier in the week, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 people.

Kavalami revealed that the attack on Masala claimed the lives of more than 13 individuals.

Originating from neighboring Uganda, the ADF has now established its base in eastern Congo, pledging allegiance to the Islamic State. The group is notorious for its frequent attacks, exacerbating the instability in a region already plagued by numerous militant groups.
