New Delhi: According to a summary of exit polls conducted by NDTV news channel, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance is poised to secure a majority in the recently concluded general election. The summary, which amalgamates findings from two exit polls, suggests that the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could secure over 350 seats in the 543-member lower house of parliament. This projection indicates a comfortable lead, surpassing the 272 seats required for a simple majority. Notably, the NDA had previously clinched 353 seats in the 2019 election.

In contrast, the opposition INDIA alliance, spearheaded by the Congress party, is anticipated to secure more than 120 seats, as per the exit poll summary. However, it’s essential to acknowledge the historical inconsistency of exit polls in India. Analysts often point out the challenges of accurately predicting election outcomes in such a vast and diverse nation, which has led to varied levels of reliability in past projections.

The general election, conducted over seven phases starting from April 19, witnessed the participation of nearly one billion eligible voters. Despite the scorching summer heat experienced in many regions, voter turnout remained substantial, reflecting the nation’s democratic fervor. Now, all eyes are on the Election Commission, which is scheduled to tally the votes cast via electronic voting machines on June 4, with results expected on the same day.

If the exit poll predictions hold true, a victory for the 73-year-old Modi would mark a significant milestone, positioning him as only the second prime minister, after independence leader Jawaharlal Nehru, to secure three consecutive terms in office.
