Severe Storms Leave Over 750,000 Without Power Across Texas and Other States

Austin: As the aftermath of severe storms continues to unfold, over 754,000 households and businesses across Texas, Kentucky, and neighboring states find themselves without power. Meteorologists and data from PowerOutage.us report widespread outages following the relentless battering over the long Memorial Day weekend.

The Southern Plains and the Ozark Mountains bore the brunt of tornado-spawning thunderstorms, resulting in a tragic toll of at least 21 lives across four U.S. states.

Leading the tally of outages is Texas power company Oncor, a subsidiary of California-based Sempra Energy (SRE.N). Oncor reports over 540,000 customers without power, primarily concentrated in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Oncor’s response to the crisis involves monitoring and addressing outages triggered by thunderstorms that unleashed large hail and wind gusts reaching speeds of up to 80 miles per hour (129 kilometers per hour) in and around the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Unfortunately, restoration estimates remain elusive for many affected customers, as indicated on Oncor’s power outage website.

The magnitude of the outages by state underscores the widespread impact of the recent storms:

Texas592,000
Kentucky81,000
Arkansas39,000
Missouri21,000
West Virginia21,000
