Brussels: The European Commission has issued a warning to Microsoft, urging the tech giant to provide detailed information regarding the potential risks associated with generative AI features within its search engine, Bing, by May 27.
Expressing concerns over the spread of deep fakes and automated manipulation of services capable of misleading voters, the Commission emphasized the necessity for clarity on these issues. Despite a request for information sent on March 14, Microsoft has yet to respond, prompting the Commission to escalate enforcement actions.

Failure to meet the deadline could result in fines of up to 1% of Bing’s total annual income, with additional penalties of up to 5% of its average daily income. Moreover, fines may be imposed if Microsoft furnishes incorrect or misleading information.
In compliance with the European Union’s Digital Services Act, tech companies are mandated to take proactive measures to combat illegal and harmful content on their platforms. Generative AI poses a significant risk to the integrity of electoral processes, particularly with the impending European Parliament elections in June.
