India Collaborates with Allies to Boost Defence Capabilities Through AI: DRDO Chief

New Delhi: The head of the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), Samir V Kamat, revealed on Thursday (18 January) that India is actively engaged with “friendly” nations to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing its defence capabilities.

In an interview with ANI, Kamat emphasized that India is working collaboratively with other countries to develop tools and conduct fundamental research aimed at improving the algorithms underlying AI.

Highlighting the diverse applications of AI in the defence sector, the DRDO chief underscored its role in preventive maintenance, surveillance, and cybersecurity. He noted that AI is increasingly contributing to offensive actions, predicting a significant impact on both military performance and efficiency.

Responding to a query about India’s collaboration with other nations in leveraging AI for defence enhancement, Kamat affirmed, “We are working in collaboration with countries which are friendly to us. With such disruptive technologies, it is good to work with other countries in collaboration.” However, he refrained from disclosing specific details about the collaborative efforts.

On the subject of AI-related threats, Kamat discussed India’s collaboration with various academic institutions to develop AI-based techniques for detecting cyber intrusions. He emphasized the significant risk of cyber threats posed by AI, stating, “The major threat from AI is in cyber. The large number of attacks which happen in AI are happening through bots which work on AI. The same AI can also be used in cyber defence.”

“We are working in a collaborative fashion with several academic institutions to ensure that the AI based on techniques to detect cyber intrusion…To prevent all our critical infrastructure is being attacked. How to use AI tools that we can prevent such attacks,” he added.
