Putin Reappoints Mishustin as Russian Prime Minister Amidst Political Speculation

Mishustin, known for his technocratic style and lack of political ambitions, previously served in the role for four years. Despite speculation, most Cabinet members are anticipated to retain their positions, indicating continuity in the Russian government.

In a move widely anticipated by political observers, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reinstated Mikhail Mishustin as the country’s Prime Minister. Mishustin, known for his low political profile and technocratic approach, previously held the position for four years.

As per Russian law, Mishustin, 58, tendered his Cabinet’s resignation on Tuesday to coincide with Putin’s inauguration for his fifth presidential term. Despite Mishustin’s lack of political ambitions, Putin has reportedly valued his skills, leading to his reappointment.

The announcement was made by Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, who disclosed that Putin has submitted Mishustin’s candidacy to the State Duma. The Duma is set to convene later today to deliberate on Mishustin’s reappointment, a process largely seen as a formality given the Kremlin’s control over the parliament.

Under constitutional amendments enacted in 2020, the prime minister’s candidacy must be approved by the lower house before the appointment of Cabinet members.

Despite speculation surrounding changes in the Cabinet, most members are expected to retain their positions. However, the fate of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu remains uncertain following the recent arrest of his close associate, Timur Ivanov, on bribery charges.

Ivanov, who held the position of deputy defence minister overseeing major military construction projects, was detained pending an official investigation. This development has led to conjecture about Shoigu’s future, despite his strong personal ties with Putin.

Shoigu has faced criticism, particularly concerning military operations in Ukraine, with some figures, such as mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, openly calling for his dismissal. Prigozhin’s subsequent death in a mysterious air crash was interpreted by many as a reprisal from the Kremlin. Shoigu’s perceived vulnerability has once again been highlighted by Ivanov’s arrest, signalling potential political manoeuvring within the Russian leadership.
