Garrick Club’s Historic Decision: Women to Become Members After 200 Years

The vote in favor of admitting women garnered nearly 60% approval from the club’s members, marking a significant shift in its long-standing policy.

London: London’s prestigious Garrick Club, established in 1831, has made a landmark decision to admit women as members, marking an end to its centuries-old all-male tradition in response to mounting societal pressure for inclusivity.

Named after the renowned 18th-century actor David Garrick, the Garrick Club has faced increasing scrutiny, especially after leaks earlier this year revealed its exclusive membership comprising influential figures like King Charles, senior politicians, journalists, judges, and actors.

Reports indicate that the vote in favor of admitting women garnered nearly 60% approval from the club’s members, signaling a significant shift in its long-standing policy. However, the Garrick Club has not yet issued a formal comment on the decision.

In March, revelations published by The Guardian unveiled the club’s membership list, which included prominent personalities like Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden, several senior judges, and numerous parliament members. This disclosure intensified criticisms against the club for perpetuating gender-based discrimination and denying women equal access to networking opportunities.

Notably, Simon Case, the UK’s top civil servant, and Richard Moore, the head of MI6, reportedly resigned from the club following the leak, reflecting the growing discontent among members regarding its outdated practices.

The Garrick Club had previously rejected a proposal to admit female members in 2015, citing the requirement for a two-thirds majority to amend club rules. Despite this setback, women were allowed limited access to the club premises as guests, with restrictions on their mobility within the establishment.
