Italy’s President Urges United Response to Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

New York: Addressing the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, Italy’s president emphasized that the ongoing conflict sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine cannot be resolved by rewarding Moscow’s aggression. Sergio Mattarella stressed that true peace can only be achieved when Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are fully restored.

As Italy currently heads the G7 meetings, Mattarella highlighted the solidarity shown by his country and numerous international partners in supporting the fundamental principle that nations attacked in violation of international law and the U.N. Charter must receive unwavering support.

“No state, no matter how powerful or how equipped it is with a menacing nuclear arsenal can think of violating principles, including the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of another country without facing sanctions,” he stated.

Mattarella underscored the significance of Russia’s invasion, noting that it extends beyond a regional conflict as Moscow seeks to exert global influence. Being a veto-wielding permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, Russia’s actions directly impact international peace and security.

The president lamented the consequences of the war in Ukraine, a nation that was once a major contributor to global food supplies. He pointed out the resulting food and energy shortages, particularly affecting parts of Africa.

Furthermore, Mattarella expressed concern over the reversal of peace dividends following the end of the Cold War, as Russia’s actions trigger a renewed arms race instead of prioritizing development and disarmament.

With the conflict now entering its third year, Italy, along with its international partners, remains steadfast in its commitment to finding a peaceful and lasting resolution. However, Mattarella emphasized that any solution must adhere to the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.

“If peace is to be fair and long lasting, it must be based on the noble and inalienable principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations,” he concluded.
