Over 20 Chinese Warplanes Maneuver Near Taiwan, Breaching Sensitive Median Line Post-Election

Chinese Military Presence Escalates Near Taiwan, Triggering Concerns After Democratic Progressive Party's Victory

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Taiwan’s defense ministry reported the detection of more than 20 Chinese warplanes, with 11 breaching a sensitive median line that separates the self-ruled island from mainland China. This marked the first significant display of force following the weekend’s presidential election.

According to the ministry, which regularly updates data on Chinese military activities around Taiwan, 24 warplanes and 5 ships were identified in the 24 hours leading up to 6 am (2200 GMT). Eleven of these aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait or entered Taiwan’s southwest and north air defense identification zones, heightening concerns about the delicate geopolitical situation.

While Taiwan operates independently with its government, military, and currency, China claims sovereignty over the island and has not ruled out the use of force to reunify it with the mainland.

The recent presidential election, won by Democratic Progressive Party’s Lai Ching-te, labeled a “separatist” by China, has intensified the already strained relations. Beijing had warned that his victory could lead to “war and decline” for Taiwan.

China’s response, marked by a sudden diplomatic switch by Pacific nation Nauru from recognizing Taiwan to China, underscores the political repercussions of the election. This move left Taiwan with only 12 countries or states recognizing its sovereignty.

The uptick in Chinese military activity, while not reaching the levels seen in September, when 103 Chinese aircraft were detected around Taiwan, raises concerns about the ongoing “grey zone” tactic employed by China. This strategy falls short of outright war but maintains a constant presence to assert influence in the region, according to conflict experts.
