Paris: Once again, Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof finds himself barred from attending the renowned Cannes Film Festival, dashing hopes of witnessing the reception of his latest work, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, in contention for the prestigious Palme d’Or. Government-imposed travel restrictions prevent his participation, marking another year of disappointment for the acclaimed director.
This setback echoes Rasoulof’s exclusion from Cannes last year due to similar constraints enforced by Iranian authorities. His outspoken criticism of the Iranian government has rendered him a target, leading to imprisonment and a subsequent ban on international travel.
Despite a brief hiatus from incarceration due to health concerns, Rasoulof’s freedom remains curtailed. This mirrors his predicament in 2023, when he was unable to serve on the Cannes Un Certain Regard jury due to travel restrictions.
Rasoulof gained international acclaim in 2020 with his film There is No Evil, a bold condemnation of capital punishment that earned him the esteemed Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
However, his return to Iran in 2017 resulted in a ban on filmmaking and international travel after being charged with producing “propaganda against the system” through his films, as reported by Deadline.

Regrettably, Rasoulof is not the sole Iranian director facing such impediments. Jafar Panahi, renowned for his debut film The White Balloon, has encountered similar restrictions since 2010. Accused of posing a threat to national security, Panahi has been prohibited from leaving Iran, engaging in filmmaking, and interacting with media.
Despite these challenges, Panahi’s passion for cinema persists. He has clandestinely produced three films, including Three Faces, which competed for the Palme d’Or in 2018, showcasing his resilience and unwavering commitment to his craft.
The struggles endured by Rasoulof and Panahi underscore the obstacles encountered by dissenting filmmakers in Iran.
