Bitcoin Hoax: Paraguay President’s Social Media Account Targeted in Cyberattack

Asuncion: Paraguay’s government announced on Monday that President Santiago Peña’s official X account appeared to have been compromised, after it was used to promote cryptocurrency Bitcoin and claim significant policy changes.

“The president’s official X account has presented irregular activity which suggests possible unauthorized entry,” the government said in an official statement.

A suspicious post, written in English and accompanied by what appeared to be a Spanish-language statement supposedly from the Paraguayan government, falsely claimed that Paraguay had adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. The post also mentioned the establishment of a $5 million Bitcoin-backed reserve fund—claims that had no basis in fact.

Authorities have urged citizens to disregard any content from President Peña’s X account until verified updates are released through official channels.

Paraguay’s national cybersecurity team has launched a probe and is coordinating with the platform X (formerly Twitter) to investigate the breach. X has not issued an immediate response to inquiries regarding the incident.
