Shanghai: Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has officially commenced mass production of its self-developed Xring O1 mobile chip, marking a major milestone in the company’s ambition to strengthen its semiconductor capabilities.
Founder Lei Jun made the announcement on Tuesday via his personal Weibo account, revealing that the chip will first power the upcoming Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone and the Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra tablet. Both devices are expected to debut at a company launch event scheduled for Thursday.
The Xring O1 represents a significant strategic investment in homegrown semiconductor technology. On Monday, Lei disclosed that Xiaomi has already poured 13.5 billion yuan ($1.87 billion) into the development of the chip. He also emphasized the company’s long-term vision, pledging at least 50 billion yuan in additional investment over the next decade to further advance its chip design capabilities.

Xiaomi’s push into proprietary chips signals a broader trend among Chinese tech firms to reduce reliance on foreign semiconductor suppliers amid ongoing global supply chain shifts and geopolitical tensions.
