New York: OpenAI is reportedly preparing to support the development of a major new data center in the United Arab Emirates, a project that could rank among the largest globally, according to a Bloomberg News report published Friday.
Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is expected to serve as a key anchor tenant for a planned 5-gigawatt data center campus in Abu Dhabi. The development underscores the UAE’s growing ambitions to become a global leader in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.
The initiative remains under discussion, and OpenAI’s involvement has not been finalized, the report noted. However, a formal announcement could be made in the near future.
OpenAI has yet to issue a public comment on the report. Reuters said it had reached out for clarification but had not received a response at the time of publication.

The potential collaboration comes as the UAE and the United States deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence. On Thursday, both countries signed an agreement that would see the UAE construct what is expected to be the largest AI campus outside of the U.S., further solidifying its role as a tech innovation hub in the Gulf region.

The project would align with the UAE’s broader strategy to attract global tech leaders and diversify its economy beyond oil by investing heavily in AI infrastructure, research, and partnerships.
