Germany’s New Chancellor Rejects Peace on Putin’s Terms, Pledges Military and Economic Renewal

Berlin: Germany’s newly appointed Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, delivered his first general policy address to Parliament on Wednesday, making clear his intent to bolster Western unity and ensure unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

In a firm rebuke of any negotiated settlement dictated by Moscow, Merz stated that Ukraine must not be compelled to accept territorial losses. His remarks served as a clear message to both European allies and the United States: resist any so-called peace agreement that serves the Kremlin’s interests.

“Ukraine must not be forced against its will to accept territorial concessions,” Merz said, according to Le Monde.

He emphasized the importance of cohesion within the transatlantic alliance in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

“It is of capital importance that the West not allow itself to be divided over this conflict.”

Merz further underscored the necessity of maintaining strong cooperation between Europe and the United States.

“The West must maintain the greatest possible unity between European and American partners.”

Economic Revival a Key Priority

Shifting focus to domestic matters, Merz acknowledged the pressing challenges facing Germany’s economy, which has experienced a prolonged stagnation. He committed to revitalizing growth and restoring the country’s economic leadership.

“Germany can once again become an economic locomotive admired by the whole world,” he said.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Merz noted:

“We have never known such a long period without economic growth in the history of our country,” he said. “Our economy is still largely competitive, but the framework conditions are no longer there.”

To reverse the downturn, Merz outlined a pro-business agenda centered around tax relief, reduced energy prices, and deregulation aimed at easing burdens on companies.

Germany to Build Europe’s Strongest Army

On defense, Merz made a sweeping pledge to transform Germany’s military posture and assume a leading role in European security. He announced that the Bundeswehr will receive the financial resources needed to become the continent’s most powerful conventional force.

“The federal government will provide all the financial resources the Bundeswehr needs to become the strongest conventional army in Europe,” Merz told lawmakers.

As the EU’s most populous and economically robust member state, Merz said Germany has a duty to act—and that allies expect it.

“This is more than adequate for the most populous and economically powerful country in Europe. Our friends and partners also expect this from us and, moreover, they even demand it,” he said.

Part of this defense strategy includes sustained military aid to Ukraine. The new administration has authorized historic levels of defense spending, including substantial loans worth hundreds of billions of euros that could be directed toward supporting Kyiv.

“There must be no doubt about our position,” Merz concluded. “Namely, unconditionally on the side of the Ukrainians.”
