New Delhi: India has formally requested additional S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems from Russia, following the platform’s proven performance during Operation Sindoor, according to senior defence officials.
As per media reports, Russian-made S-400 systems, already deployed by the Indian armed forces, played a pivotal role in neutralising incoming threats, including missiles and drones launched from Pakistan, during the recent military engagement along the western frontier. The systems reportedly showcased exceptional precision and reliability in intercepting hostile aerial targets.
Officials closely involved in the operation highlighted that the S-400s delivered critical tactical advantage, enhancing India’s multi-layered air defence architecture during heightened conflict scenarios. Their performance has bolstered confidence in the system’s ability to provide a strong deterrent against regional threats.
In light of this operational success, India has now approached Moscow for additional S-400 units to further strengthen its air defence grid. Sources added that Russia is positively inclined to fulfill the request and may greenlight the delivery soon.

The S-400 Triumf, considered one of the world’s most advanced air defence systems, is capable of engaging a wide range of aerial targets including fighter jets, ballistic missiles, and drones at ranges up to 400 km. India initially signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in 2018 to procure five regimental units, with deliveries having begun in 2021.
This new request marks India’s intent to reinforce its air defence strategy amid growing regional tensions and the increasing sophistication of aerial threats.
