Pakistan Calls for De-Escalation, Offers to End Tensions if India Backs Down

Islamabad: Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif indicated on May 7 that the country is prepared to “wrap up” tensions with India, provided that New Delhi takes steps to de-escalate the situation. “If India backs down, we will definitely wrap up this tension,” Asif said.

His comments followed an Indian military strike earlier in the day that targeted terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Asif emphasized that Pakistan would only act in self-defense if provoked, reiterating the country’s stance in recent weeks.

“We have been saying all along in the last fortnight that we’ll never initiate anything hostile towards India. But if we’re attacked, we’ll respond. If India backs down, we will definitely wrap up this tension,” the minister said, as reported by Bloomberg Television.

Regarding the potential for peace talks, Asif mentioned that he was not aware of any ongoing discussions or efforts in that direction.

The Indian military’s strikes were a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred earlier in the week, with nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir hit by missile strikes early on Wednesday.
