OpenAI Eyes Windsurf to Boost ChatGPT’s Coding Power in $3 Billion Move

While OpenAI declined to comment on the acquisition, Windsurf — formerly known as Codeium — has yet to respond to media inquiries, including those from Reuters.

New York: OpenAI is reportedly set to make its largest-ever acquisition, agreeing to buy AI-assisted coding platform Windsurf for approximately $3 billion, according to a Bloomberg News report published Monday. The report, which cites individuals familiar with the matter, states that the deal is not yet finalized.

While OpenAI declined to comment on the acquisition, Windsurf — formerly known as Codeium — has yet to respond to media inquiries, including those from Reuters.

The acquisition, once completed, would mark a major expansion in OpenAI’s push to solidify its footprint in the AI-powered software development space. Windsurf has been gaining traction as a leading coding assistant tool and was recently in discussions with prominent investors such as General Catalyst and Kleiner Perkins to raise funding at the same $3 billion valuation — the price OpenAI is reportedly paying.

Last August, Windsurf was valued at $1.25 billion following a $150 million funding round led by General Catalyst, with additional backing from Kleiner Perkins and Greenoaks. Its rapid valuation growth underscores investor confidence in the startup’s potential to reshape how developers code using AI.

This move would significantly strengthen OpenAI’s ecosystem by enhancing the coding capabilities of ChatGPT and other developer-facing tools. With AI-native code generation becoming a fiercely competitive space, Windsurf’s integration could help accelerate innovation, improve developer productivity, and expand OpenAI’s offerings in the enterprise and cloud tooling sector.

The acquisition aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy of scaling infrastructure and technical capabilities through targeted acquisitions. In 2024, the company acquired Rockset — a search and analytics startup — in a nine-figure stock deal to bolster its real-time data infrastructure.

The timing of this acquisition comes as OpenAI continues to experience explosive user growth. As of February 2025, weekly active users surpassed 400 million, a significant leap from 300 million in December 2024.

In parallel, OpenAI is reportedly preparing to raise up to $40 billion in a new funding round led by SoftBank Group, targeting a potential $300 billion valuation — a bold move signaling its intent to remain at the forefront of global AI innovation.

If the Windsurf deal closes successfully, it would not only mark OpenAI’s biggest acquisition to date but also reinforce its dominance in AI-driven software development tools.
