DHARAMSALA– As the Dalai Lama approaches his 90th birthday on July 6, the revered Buddhist monk and Nobel Peace Prize winner plans to address a critical question for exiled Tibetans: should there be a successor to his role as the spiritual and symbolic leader of their homeland? The charismatic figure, who has embodied dreams of Tibetan autonomy since fleeing to India in 1959, will consult his followers on the future of the Dalai Lama institution, a tradition spanning over 600 years.
Thupten Jinpa, the Dalai Lama’s translator for nearly four decades and a Buddhist scholar, confirmed that petitions from Tibetan Buddhist communities, including some within Tibet, urge the continuation of the role. Jinpa, speaking in India, likened the position to a Buddhist “papal institution,” vital not only for Tibet but also for Himalayan regions, Mongolia, and parts of Russia. He anticipates the Dalai Lama will issue a statement before his birthday, likely affirming the need for a 15th Dalai Lama.

The current Dalai Lama, identified at age two in 1936 as the 14th reincarnation, has long prepared for this transition. In 2011, he relinquished political leadership to a democratically elected Tibetan government-in-exile. The Dalai Lama has vowed any successor will be chosen in the “free world” through the traditional system managed by the Gaden Phodrang Trust in McLeod Ganj.
