India on Musk’s Radar: Tesla CEO Plans Visit After PM Modi Call

Tesla is reportedly on the brink of entering the Indian automobile market, a move that could significantly reshape the electric vehicle landscape in the country.

New York: Elon Musk announced on Saturday that he plans to visit India later this year, shortly after a conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi focused on opportunities for collaboration in technology and innovation. The declaration marks a notable development in the deepening relationship between Musk’s ventures and India.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO described his interaction with Modi as an “honor”, underscoring the significance he places on India’s potential as a strategic partner.

“I am looking forward to visiting India later this year!” Musk wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Modi confirmed that he had spoken to Musk, emphasizing their continued dialogue on key areas of mutual interest. Their latest interaction follows an in-person meeting in Washington DC in 2023.

“Spoke to @elonmusk and talked about various issues, including the topics we covered during our meeting in Washington DC earlier this year. We discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the areas of technology and innovation,” Modi posted on X.

He further added, “India remains committed to advancing our partnerships with the US in these domains.”

Elon Musk is widely regarded as a prominent figure in U.S. policy circles and currently leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative within the Donald Trump administration aimed at minimizing government expenditure and optimizing federal operations.

Tesla is reportedly on the brink of entering the Indian automobile market, a move that could significantly reshape the electric vehicle landscape in the country. Simultaneously, Starlink—Musk’s satellite internet venture—is pushing for entry, despite pending approvals.

India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently held talks with Starlink executives to explore potential partnerships, technology transfers, and investment opportunities. While Starlink has already signed agreements with major telecom operators like Jio and Airtel, the actual rollout of services awaits clearances related to security and spectrum allocation.

With a satellite fleet exceeding 6,750 in orbit, Starlink is seen as a potential game-changer for rural and remote internet connectivity. However, its expansion into the Indian market has stirred concerns among telecom companies regarding satellite spectrum regulation.

Musk’s visit later this year is expected to further catalyze dialogue on these strategic initiatives.
