Ukraine’s Railways Hit by Cyber Attack, Freight Services Disrupted

Though Ukrzaliznytsia has not officially blamed anyone, Ukrainian officials suggest Russia is behind the attack.

Kyiv: Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, confirmed on Tuesday that a large-scale cyber attack had severely impacted its online freight services, in addition to previously reported disruptions to passenger ticketing systems.

The outage was first detected on Sunday when the railway company informed passengers of an IT system failure, advising them to purchase tickets at stations or directly onboard trains. While passenger services faced immediate setbacks, the attack also hindered freight operations, a critical component of Ukraine’s supply chain.

Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine’s railway network has become a crucial transportation lifeline for both civilians and military logistics, facilitating the movement of passengers, weapons, fuel, and essential equipment.

“In addition to passenger services, our IT specialists and partners are working to restore freight services,” Ukrzaliznytsia stated in a Facebook post.

“Immediately after the cyber attack, we temporarily switched to paper-based document management, which we notified our customers about. All railway employees have been instructed.”

While the railway company has not officially attributed the attack, a Ukrainian security official and a senior government source, both speaking anonymously, suggested that Russia was likely responsible.

Ukrzaliznytsia has provided commercial clients with detailed instructions on how to request wagons, manage freight logistics, and coordinate shipments to export ports and Ukraine’s western border under the new operating conditions.
