Jerusalem: The Israeli military acknowledged that its forces mistakenly targeted a building belonging to the Red Cross in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, citing an identification error. The strike, which occurred on Monday, resulted in damage to an office of the aid organization caused by an explosive projectile.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that no casualties were reported but emphasized that the attack had a significant impact on its ability to carry out humanitarian operations in the region.
According to the Israeli military, troops fired at the structure after identifying potential threats and suspecting hostile activity. However, upon further review, it was determined that the identification had been incorrect.
“The structure’s ownership was unknown to the force at the time of the shooting,” the Israeli military stated, adding that the incident would be subject to an internal investigation.
