Acting President Urges Restraint Ahead of Yoon Suk Yeol Impeachment Verdict

Authorities are taking no chances, implementing strict crowd control measures.

Seoul: South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok has urged the public to remain calm and respect the upcoming Constitutional Court ruling on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol over his brief martial law order. Speaking on Friday, Choi emphasized the importance of accepting the decision, regardless of the outcome, to maintain national stability.

Choi also announced that the government would deploy extensive police resources across key areas of Seoul, vowing to uphold public order and stating that any attempts to challenge state authority would not be tolerated. Security measures have been intensified around the court, including a ban on drone flights in the vicinity.

Both supporters and opponents of Yoon are expected to gather in large numbers ahead of the ruling, which is anticipated in the coming days. Authorities have warned of potential unrest, as previous demonstrations near the Constitutional Court have drawn thousands of Yoon’s supporters, requiring a heavy police presence.

“The international community is keeping a close eye on the Republic of Korea. Our country’s democratic resilience is being tested,” Choi stated during a meeting with cabinet ministers, referring to South Korea by its official name. “It is essential for social stability and community development that all citizens express their opinions in a legal manner and respect and accept the results of any decision,” he added.

Authorities are taking no chances, implementing strict crowd control measures. Police have stated they are prepared to use pepper spray and batons should there be a repeat of the violent clashes seen in January, when Yoon’s supporters stormed a court building.

To further reinforce security, a protective “bubble” has been set up within a 100-meter radius of the court, according to local reports. Additionally, barbed wire has been installed along the court’s perimeter to prevent unauthorized entry.
