Guterres: Women’s Rights Under Attack, Urges Global Pushback

Guterres underscored that gender equality was not merely a matter of fairness but of power.

Ney York: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has sounded the alarm over the growing threats to women’s rights, declaring that the world must push back against efforts to reverse progress.

Speaking at a United Nations event ahead of International Women’s Day, Guterres warned that centuries of discrimination were now being compounded by emerging challenges.

“Digital tools, while brimming with promise, are also often silencing women’s voices, amplifying bias, and fuelling harassment,” he said on Friday. “Women’s bodies have become political battlegrounds.”

He pointed out that online violence was increasingly spilling over into real-world harm. “Instead of mainstreaming equal rights, we are witnessing the mainstreaming of chauvinism and misogyny,” he said.

Guterres underscored that gender equality was not merely a matter of fairness but of power. “It is about power – who gets a seat at the table, and who is locked out,” he said. “It is about dismantling systems that allow inequalities to fester. And it is about ensuring a better world for all.”
