Macron Warns of Russian Threat to Europe, Urges Military Preparedness

Macron questioned whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would stop at Ukraine, highlighting that the Kremlin is rearming itself at an unprecedented pace.

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron, in a televised address on Wednesday, warned that Russian aggression “knows no borders” and poses a direct threat to France and Europe. He stressed that Moscow’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine, urging European nations to bolster their military capabilities in case the United States withdraws its support.

“I want to believe the US will stay by our side, but we have to be ready if that isn’t the case,” Macron stated.

Macron questioned whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would stop at Ukraine, highlighting that the Kremlin is rearming itself at an unprecedented pace. His remarks come ahead of an extraordinary European leaders’ summit in Brussels on Thursday, where security and defense will be key topics.

“I’m speaking to you tonight because of the international situation and its consequences for Europe… I know you are legitimately worried when faced with the historic events that are shaking the world order,” Macron said in his prime-time address.

The French leader’s office stated that his speech aimed to address growing public concerns over various geopolitical issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war, the US-EU trade dispute, and former US President Donald Trump’s stance on Ukraine aid.

Detailing Washington’s shifting approach to the ongoing three-year war, Macron noted: “The war in Ukraine, which has left almost one million dead and injured, continues with the same intensity. The US, our ally, has changed its position on this war, supporting Ukraine less and allowing doubt to linger on what will come next.”
