Forced Evacuations in Donetsk: Protecting Families as Shelling Intensifies

Governor Vadim Filashkin emphasized the critical nature of the decision, stating it was necessary to safeguard civilians from the intensifying shelling.

Kyiv: War has uprooted millions, forcing them to abandon their homes and livelihoods, leaving behind memories of a life now overshadowed by conflict.

As the battle for control in Ukraine rages on, certain regions, such as Donetsk Oblast, have become almost unlivable due to relentless shelling and military operations. For many, the decision to leave is fraught with emotional and practical challenges, yet staying behind often poses a far greater risk.

Authorities in Donetsk Oblast recently mandated the evacuation of families with children from over 20 settlements in response to escalating Russian attacks.

300,000 Civilians Still in the Area

Governor Vadim Filashkin emphasized the critical nature of the decision, stating it was necessary to safeguard civilians from the intensifying shelling. “Children should not have to live in constant fear, hiding from artillery fire and missile strikes,” Filashkin said, urging parents to heed the evacuation order.

The evacuation efforts, which have been ongoing for months, intensified during the summer and fall, coinciding with a surge in Russian military activity in eastern Ukraine. Despite these efforts, over 300,000 civilians are estimated to remain in Ukrainian-controlled areas of Donetsk Oblast.

The latest directive specifically targets families in Komar and Kryvorizhzhia, where a combined total of 110 children reside—76 in Komar and 34 in Kryvorizhzhia.

Near the Frontlines

Several of the settlements slated for evacuation lie within 15 kilometers of Pokrovsk, a city that has seen heavy fighting in recent weeks. These areas have borne the brunt of military aggression, leaving homes, schools, and infrastructure devastated.
