New Fire Erupts Along 405 Freeway in Sepulveda Pass, Los Angeles County

New Fire named "Sepulveda Fire" erupts along the 405 Freeway in Sepulveda Pass, Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles, CA: Late Wednesday night, emergency services were dispatched to combat a rapidly spreading brush fire along the 405 Freeway in the notorious Sepulveda Pass of Los Angeles County. The fire, now dubbed the “Sepulveda Fire,” was reported just after 11 p.m. near the Sepulveda off-ramp, causing immediate concern due to the area’s history of destructive wildfires.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was quick to respond, with units arriving to find flames consuming up to 4-5 acres of medium to heavy brush. The fire, influenced by the area’s challenging topography and moderate winds of about 5 mph, was described as having a moderate rate of spread. With the potential for the fire to grow, four camp crews were called in to assist in containment efforts.

No immediate evacuation orders were issued, but the situation is being closely monitored due to the proximity of residential areas, including Bel Air and Encino, where the Getty Center is located. This region has been the scene of significant fires in the past, including the Getty Fire, which underscores the vulnerability of the area to such incidents.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has set up for potential closure of the 405 at the Sepulveda Pass, with off-ramps already closed at Getty and Skirball to facilitate firefighting operations. Although the freeway remains open, traffic is expected to be impacted as the firefight continues.

Initial reports suggest this fire might be the result of arson, indicating a worrying trend of deliberate fire-starting in the region. The LAFD has not yet confirmed the cause, but investigations are underway.

Residents and commuters in the area are advised to stay updated through local news channels and official LAFD communications for the latest on road closures and fire containment. The fire’s proximity to UCLA has also prompted warnings to students and staff to be prepared for possible impacts.

As the night progresses, the focus will be on preventing the fire from crossing major thoroughfares and encroaching on residential areas, with helicopters and ground crews working in tandem to create firebreaks and douse the flames. The community’s resilience is once again being tested, highlighting the ongoing threat of wildfires in this fire-prone region of Southern California.
