Monfils’ Comeback Magic: From First Set Loss to Fourth Round Glory at Aussie Open

Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils are the only current players who competed in the Australian Open back in 2005, now both in the second week of the 2025 tournament.

Melbourne, Australia – In an extraordinary display of longevity in professional tennis, Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils have become the only players from the 2005 Australian Open to still compete in the second week of the tournament 20 years later in 2025. This feat underscores their enduring prowess and resilience on the court.

On Saturday, French tennis veteran Gael Monfils showcased his undiminished talent by orchestrating a thrilling comeback against the fourth-seeded American, Taylor Fritz. Despite dropping the first set, Monfils managed to turn the match around, securing a victory with scores of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(1), 6-4, to advance into the fourth round of the Australian Open. His celebration included signature dance moves, followed by an ecstatic scream, as the 38-year-old confirmed his place in the next stage of the tournament.

Earlier in the competition, Monfils had battled through a marathon five-set match against compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. After taking the first two sets, Monfils faced a fierce comeback from Perricard, who forced the match into a fifth set after winning the third and fourth in tiebreakers. Monfils, however, demonstrated his experience and tenacity, sealing the match 7-6, 6-3, 6(6)-7, 6(5)-7, 6-4.

Do you think you could win the tournament?” was the question posed. Monfils responded, “My dream is to have an unbelievable family. Tennis is cool.. But my dream is out there.” This candid statement highlights a significant change in his life priorities, focusing more on personal fulfillment outside of professional achievements.

The ongoing journey of Djokovic and Monfils at the Australian Open 2025 not only captivates fans with their on-court battles but also with their stories of perseverance, adaptation, and the pursuit of happiness beyond the courts.
