Severe snowfall and freezing temperatures as low as -11°C have caused significant travel disruptions across the UK, with several major airports suspending operations and key roads rendered impassable.

Airport Closures and Delays
Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport shut their runways on Sunday morning due to heavy overnight snow, leaving travelers stranded. Manchester Airport stated its teams are working tirelessly to clear the runways but have been hindered by persistent snowfall since early morning.

Bristol Airport, which also experienced closures earlier in the day, managed to reopen around 11 p.m. However, delays are expected to persist as aircraft and crews are out of position due to cancellations. All affected airports are advising passengers to check directly with their airlines for the latest updates.

Road and Rail Chaos
National Highways has warned that up to 25 cm of snow could blanket northern England, causing widespread road closures. The A628 Woodhead Pass, a crucial route connecting Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire, remains closed in both directions. Similarly, the A66 in County Durham and Cumbria has been shut between the M6 and A1(M), while sections of the M1 in South Yorkshire were reduced to two lanes following an accident involving a heavy goods vehicle.

Rail services are also facing disruption, with the line between Leeds and Halifax via Dewsbury closed in both directions. Northern rail routes are expected to see delays extending into Monday.

Flooding and Ice Warnings
In Hampshire, one lane of the northbound A3 was closed due to flooding caused by melting snow. National Highways has also cautioned that rain falling on frozen ground could lead to dangerous icy conditions, particularly in elevated areas such as the Cotswolds and Peak District.

Advice for Travelers
Authorities are urging caution as treacherous conditions persist. Travelers are advised to monitor updates from transport services and allow extra time for journeys. With more snow and icy weather predicted, disruptions are expected to continue into the coming days.
