In Just 6 Weeks: Ukrainian Engineers Craft Vital Armor for Patriot Air Defense

The Patriot air defense system, a critical asset in Ukraine’s defense strategy, has been supplied by international allies including the United States, Germany, and Romania.

Kyiv: In the midst of an ongoing conflict, necessity drives innovation, leading to breakthroughs that bolster national defense. Ukraine’s war effort has underscored the power of local industries and expertise in adapting to unprecedented challenges, with engineers from Metinvest, the country’s largest steel producer, playing a pivotal role.

In a remarkable feat of ingenuity, the engineers designed specialized armor to protect the Patriot air defense system’s control module, marking a significant achievement in Ukraine’s defense capabilities, according to Hotnews.

Protection Without Compromise

The Patriot air defense system, a critical asset in Ukraine’s defense strategy, has been supplied by international allies including the United States, Germany, and Romania. Metinvest’s armor design, created in just six weeks, highlights the remarkable speed of innovation under wartime pressures.

Crafted from Ukrainian steel, the armor includes nearly 200 elements, with steel plates up to 8 millimeters thick. Weighing more than 2.6 tons, the armor was engineered to provide protection while maintaining the system’s mobility and functionality.

Oleksandr Myronenko, Chief Operating Officer of Metinvest Group, referred to the project as a milestone in supporting Ukraine’s defense forces, stating, “We created this from scratch to ensure both the defenders and the control center of the Patriot system are shielded from debris damage.”

A Key Asset in Countering Air Threats

The Patriot system has played a crucial role in countering air attacks from Russian forces. Despite Russia’s claims of targeting these systems, Ukraine has effectively used decoys and other strategies to safeguard its critical infrastructure.

Metinvest’s contributions extend beyond the Patriot system. The company is also manufacturing steel shields for military vehicles, including T-64 and T-72 tanks, U.S.-made M1 Abrams tanks, and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. In addition, there are plans to expand their work to include Leopard 2 tanks.
