Beverly Hills, California: The 2025 awards season will commence on Sunday with the highly anticipated Golden Globe Awards, where films like Wicked, The Brutalist, and Emilia Perez will compete for prestigious accolades and media attention ahead of the Academy Awards.
Stars such as Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Angelina Jolie are in the running for acting honors, making for a glamorous red-carpet affair. Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the ceremony for the first time, which will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
While past Golden Globes have been known for their more laid-back atmosphere compared to the Oscars, where the industry’s highest accolades are presented in March, the night promises to be filled with laughter and memorable moments. Celebrities from both film and television can be seen enjoying cocktails and champagne, while hosts like Ricky Gervais have earned their place in history with sharp humor aimed at the A-list crowd and voters alike.

Glaser, known for her wit and fearless comedy, spoke about the tone she’s setting for this year’s ceremony. “There’s definitely jokes that I wanted to make that I had to cut that just are too critical or too cynical,” Glaser shared in an interview with Reuters. “This is not a roast. This is a night to celebrate stuff, so I want to set a good tone and I want people who were nominated to feel proud of themselves. I don’t want them to feel under attack.”
The presenter lineup includes several high-profile celebrities such as Dwayne Johnson, Elton John, Andrew Garfield, and Awkwafina.
Among the movie contenders, Emilia Perez, a Spanish-language musical, and The Brutalist, a post-World War II epic, dominate the nominations. The Brutalist, which stars Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor seeking a new life in America, is widely regarded as a top contender for Best Film Drama. Other competitors in this category include Conclave, about the election of a pope, and two films starring Chalamet: the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and the highly anticipated Dune: Part II.
The Golden Globes, unlike the Oscars, split films into separate categories for musicals and comedies. Nominees in this field include Wicked, the Broadway adaptation of the prequel to The Wizard of Oz, and Anora, a dark romantic comedy. Emilia Perez also finds its place in this category, adding another layer of excitement to an already dynamic lineup.
Scott Feinberg, executive editor for awards at The Hollywood Reporter, predicts The Brutalist or Conclave may take home the top drama prize. As for the musical and comedy category, Feinberg notes the challenge in predicting the winner due to the distinct and varied nature of the nominees: Emilia Perez, Wicked, Anora, and The Substance—the latter starring Demi Moore as a fading celebrity in pursuit of eternal youth, which takes on a horror film approach.
Feinberg emphasizes the importance of a Golden Globe win as a major boost in the run-up to the Oscars. “If a movie or actor takes home a Globe, it increases the likelihood a member of the film academy will check out that project,” he explained.
The Golden Globe Awards are decided by a body of 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, a far smaller and more diverse group than the approximately 9,000 voters who determine the Academy Award winners. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has expanded its voting body and implemented reforms in recent years to address criticisms about ethical lapses and diversity issues.
On the television front, The Bear leads with the most nominations, followed by Only Murders in the Building and Shogun, a historical epic. With a mix of fresh talent and seasoned veterans, the 2025 Golden Globe Awards are set to be a celebration of creativity and excellence in film and television.
