Kyiv: On December 29, Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) intensified its sabotage campaign against Russian infrastructure, targeting both occupied Ukrainian territories and regions within Russia itself.
Disrupting Communication Networks
GUR operatives have dealt significant blows to Russian communication networks. In the occupied Donetsk region, Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed four facilities operated by “Phoenix”, an illegal Russian communications operator extensively used by Russian forces to coordinate operations in the area.
Moreover, GUR expanded its operations to Russia’s Leningrad region, targeting cellular communication infrastructure. These strikes significantly disrupted communication systems, further impairing Russia’s ability to control the occupied territories.
The full extent of the damage caused by these operations is still under evaluation.
Railway Sabotage
In addition to communication disruptions, Ukraine has escalated its sabotage of Russian railways. On December 27, a freight train in Voskresensk, Moscow Region, was attacked. A tank car exploded, sparking a fire that caused damage to railway equipment.
Earlier in December, GUR operatives targeted three railway relay cabinets in the Yaroslavl region, vital for controlling train movements. These strikes severely disrupted the flow of goods and personnel, complicating logistics for the Russian military.

Further sabotage operations include the destruction of a railway bridge in Ulyanovsk on December 14, an arson attack in Krasnodar on December 13 that disabled three locomotives, and the burning of two diesel locomotives at a railway depot in Bryansk on December 5.

This surge of sabotage operations is part of a growing trend to target critical Russian infrastructure supporting its war efforts against Ukraine. The GUR has stated, “The mysterious destruction or disabling of facilities used by the aggressor state in its genocidal war against Ukraine does not stop.”
