Syrian Rebel Flags Raised at Embassies Worldwide in Historic Display

Syria’s Foreign Ministry declared that its diplomatic missions abroad would now serve all citizens under a “new page” in the nation’s history.

Supporters of Syrian rebels, who ousted President Bashar al-Assad, stormed several Syrian embassies abroad on Sunday, replacing the Assad government’s flag with the rebels’ black, green, and white banner bearing three stars. The incidents reflect celebrations of what they consider the end of decades-long dictatorship under Assad. Insurgents also entered the Italian envoy’s residence in Damascus. Below is a summary of the events:

Spain

Around 150 demonstrators gathered outside the Syrian embassy in Madrid, cheering and shouting “Freedom!” as they replaced the Assad government’s flag with the rebel flag.
“This is a memorable day for the whole Syrian people. The 8th of December 2024. We are going to create a free country for all the Syrian people,” said Bilal Kutaini, 32, a dentist celebrating outside the embassy.

Greece

In Athens, rebel supporters hoisted their flag from the Syrian embassy’s rooftop after gaining entry. Greek police detained four individuals but allowed the flag to remain flying.
“Our joy is indescribable. Fifty-five years of horrible dictatorship has finally ended,” said Alompeint Marouf, 59, among the celebrators. Protesters reportedly tore down Assad’s portrait inside the embassy, according to Greek media reports.

Italy

Rebel insurgents entered the residence of Italy’s ambassador in Damascus in search of pro-Assad troops or documents. Shots were fired at a wall but did not harm the ambassador or security personnel.
“They took away only three cars, and that was it,” said Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

Supporters of the Syrian opposition gathered in front of the Syrian embassy in Belgrade. Laughing and hugging, they raised the rebel flag on a pole in the courtyard.

Sweden

The three-starred flag of the Syrian revolution was raised at the Syrian embassy in Stockholm, as reported by broadcaster TV4.
