Turkey Ends Meta Investigation Over Threads-Instagram Data Practices

Meta also committed that data collected through Threads will not be merged with Instagram data unless users explicitly choose to link their accounts.

Ankara: Turkey’s competition board announced on Thursday that it has terminated its investigation into Meta Platforms concerning data-sharing practices between the social media platforms Threads and Instagram. The decision follows Meta’s commitments to address competition-related concerns, which the board deemed sufficient to close the case.

As part of its assurances, Meta informed the authority that both existing Threads users and new users will have the option to create and use a Threads profile independently, without needing an Instagram account, once the app is reinstated in Turkey. Meta also committed that data collected through Threads will not be merged with Instagram data unless users explicitly choose to link their accounts.

The investigation, launched last year, examined potential competition law violations linked to the integration of Threads and Instagram. In April, Meta temporarily suspended the Threads platform in Turkey to comply with an interim order issued by the competition authority.
