Earthquake Hits Western Iran, 15 Injured in Khuzestan

Tehran: A 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook Iran’s western Khuzestan Province on Thursday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), injured at least 15 people but caused no reported damage to the region’s vital oil infrastructure, Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported.

Authorities promptly mobilized rescue teams across Khuzestan and nearby provinces to assess the situation and provide aid. IRNA also noted that several aftershocks were recorded following the initial tremor.

Khuzestan’s Strategic Significance

Khuzestan Province is a critical region for Iran, home to significant oil reserves and key energy infrastructure. The absence of damage to these facilities ensures uninterrupted oil production, a crucial component of the country’s economy.
