Kyiv: Technological innovation is playing an increasingly crucial role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where military advancements are becoming as vital as traditional firepower. In a major move to bolster its defense capabilities, Ukraine plans to purchase thousands of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) next year, marking a significant step toward adapting technology for modern warfare.
These advanced robotic vehicles will serve multiple purposes on the battlefield, including transporting supplies, delivering ammunition, and evacuating wounded soldiers from high-risk zones near the frontlines. The acquisition is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to reduce the risks faced by troops under constant bombardment from Russian shelling and drone attacks.
Mihailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Innovation, has been at the forefront of integrating technology into the military. Fedorov stressed the importance of these unmanned platforms in minimizing human exposure to danger in conflict zones.
“This year, we acquired a few thousand platforms. Next year, we’ll need tens of thousands,” Fedorov stated in an interview with Reuters, highlighting the rapid pace of technological adoption.
Robotic Vehicles Already in Use
Some of these unmanned vehicles have already been deployed in critical regions, such as the Kursk area in Russia, where Ukrainian forces gained a foothold during a summer offensive. The vehicles have proven invaluable in facilitating logistics and operations in high-risk environments, where human access is limited.
To maximize the utility of these vehicles, Ukraine has launched training programs across the country, equipping soldiers with the skills to operate the advanced machines. These programs ensure that the military can fully leverage the potential of UGVs in combat situations.
A Shift in Modern Warfare
The deployment of UGVs is just one element of Ukraine’s broader military modernization efforts. As the battlefield stagnates into a brutal stalemate in some areas, technological evolution continues to shape the war.

In addition to unmanned ground vehicles, Fedorov has led efforts to enhance Ukraine’s drone capabilities. The development of long-range attack drones has accelerated, with Ukraine dramatically increasing production in 2023. President Volodymyr Zelensky has set a goal to manufacture 30,000 of these drones by next year, which will play a crucial role in penetrating deep into Russian territory.
Addressing Military Setbacks
Despite the technological advancements, Ukraine has faced setbacks in the eastern regions, where Russian forces have made significant gains. Zelensky recently acknowledged the shortage of manpower and firepower to recapture all occupied territories. Instead of relying solely on military force, Ukraine is increasingly open to pursuing diplomatic solutions to resolve the conflict.
