Bangkok: Thailand has officially protested an incident involving Myanmar’s navy firing on Thai fishing vessels, resulting in one fisherman’s death, injuries to two others, and the detention of dozens. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra addressed the issue on Sunday, emphasizing Thailand’s stance against violence and seeking clarity on the events.
The Thai defense ministry reported that Myanmar’s navy opened fire on two of 15 Thai fishing vessels on Saturday. The boats were said to be 4-5.7 nautical miles (7.4-10.6 km) inside Myanmar’s territorial waters near Thailand’s southern Ranong province. However, Shinawatra cast doubt on claims of territorial intrusion, saying, “It is inconclusive,” when asked whether the vessels had encroached on Myanmar’s waters.
Shinawatra reaffirmed Thailand’s opposition to violence under any circumstances and urged swift action to secure the release of four Thai nationals among the 31 detained fishermen. She also stated that more information was being sought to clarify the situation.
Thai Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced that a formal letter protesting the use of force was sent to Myanmar via a local border mechanism. The letter demanded comprehensive details about the incident and the immediate return of the detained boat and crew. Similarly, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has expressed concern by summoning the Myanmar ambassador for a meeting scheduled on Monday. The foreign minister’s communication seeks further clarification and the expeditious release of the detained Thai nationals.
