Search Underway After Navy Submarine Hits Fishing Boat Off Goa

11 crew members have been rescued, while efforts continue to locate the remaining two.

Panaji: An Indian Navy submarine collided with the fishing vessel Marthoma, carrying 13 crew members, approximately 70 nautical miles northwest of Goa. The collision, which occurred on November 21, prompted an extensive search and rescue (SAR) operation led by the Indian Navy.

So far, 11 crew members have been rescued, while efforts continue to locate the remaining two. “Coordinated Search and Rescue efforts for the remaining two crew members of Marthoma, which reportedly collided with an Indian Naval submarine PM 21 on November 21, 2024, about 70 nm northwest of Goa, are in progress,” stated the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The MoD added, “Additional assets, including those from the Coast Guard, have been diverted to the area to augment the efforts.”

Search Operation in Full Swing

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai is overseeing the operation. The Indian Navy has deployed six ships and aircraft for the SAR mission, supported by additional Coast Guard resources. Despite challenging conditions, the authorities are maintaining round-the-clock efforts to locate the missing crew members.

The collision occurred as the submarine was navigating along the west coast. Details about the incident’s cause remain under investigation. There has been no update on the condition of the missing fishermen or the damage sustained by the vessels involved.

Context of the Incident

The collision comes shortly after the Indian Navy conducted a tactical phase of the Sea Vigil-24 exercise at the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. The exercise demonstrated swift response capabilities, involving CISF personnel, Indian Army snipers, and the Victoria Memorial’s management team. Hostages were safely rescued, and simulated threats were neutralized, showcasing the Navy’s operational readiness.
