Moscow/Kyiv: The conflict in Ukraine has entered a new phase as Russia launched its most extensive bomber-based missile attack in more than 18 months. Strategic bombers, which had been sparingly used, took center stage in a strike described by analysts as a significant escalation.
On Sunday, November 17, Russia deployed seven Tu-160 bombers and 16 Tu-95MS bombers, firing a combined total of approximately 80 Kh-555 and Kh-101 cruise missiles. This marked the first involvement of Tu-160 bombers in the conflict since May 18, 2023.
Expanded Deployment
During the May 2023 attack, only two Tu-160 bombers were involved, launching 22 missiles alongside eight Tu-95MS bombers. The recent operation represents a sharp increase in both the number of aircraft and munitions used.
Russia’s Tu-160 bomber fleet remains relatively small, with only around 15 units in service, many of which are undergoing upgrades to the Tu-160M standard. The limited availability of these aircraft has made Russia cautious about their deployment.
Analysts have noted that despite the combined bombers’ capacity to carry up to 212 missiles, only 80 were used in the November 17 strike. This suggests a calculated move by Russia to conserve its missile stockpile while still delivering a powerful message through its strategic air assets.
The Tu-160: A Powerhouse of the Skies
Nicknamed “Blackjack” by NATO and “White Swan” in Russia, the Tu-160 is renowned as the world’s fastest and heaviest bomber. Introduced in the 1980s, its distinctive variable-sweep wings and sleek design have made it a symbol of Russian airpower.

The bomber measures 180 feet in length with a wingspan of 117 feet and boasts a maximum payload capacity of 31 tons. With a top speed of 1,367 mph, it can deliver devastating firepower at an unparalleled range.
Strategic Implications
The use of Tu-160 bombers in this latest offensive signals a shift in Russian strategy, emphasizing long-range precision strikes to pressure Ukrainian defenses. The decision to engage a larger number of bombers reflects Moscow’s attempt to intensify its aerial campaign while balancing resource preservation.
