Kyiv: Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has detained a high-ranking special forces commander accused of leaking critical military plans to Russia’s GRU, the country’s military intelligence agency.
Leaking Operational Plans for Sabotage
The detained officer, holding a rank equivalent to lieutenant colonel, allegedly provided detailed intelligence on Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance missions, particularly in regions like Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimea.
According to the SBU, the information shared included planned routes, weapons specifications, and target details for missions behind enemy lines. The GRU reportedly aimed to leverage this intelligence to counter Ukrainian special forces along the frontlines and in Russian-occupied territories.
In a statement, the SBU highlighted the potential repercussions of these leaks, noting the significant threat they posed to Ukraine’s operational security and the lives of its soldiers.
Recruited Before the Full-Scale Invasion
The suspect’s ties to the GRU reportedly date back to before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. According to the SBU, the officer was “activated” as an agent in the spring of 2023 through personal connections in Russia.
