New York: Google has launched a live scam detection feature for Pixel 6, 7, and 9 series smartphones, aiming to enhance user safety by alerting users to potential scam calls in real time. The new functionality, integrated into the Google Phone app, marks a significant step in call security by leveraging Google’s advanced AI and machine learning capabilities to detect fraudulent activity.
The live scam detection system analyzes incoming calls in real time, evaluating caller ID, phone number patterns, and unusual call behaviors to assess the likelihood of a scam. When a call is identified as suspicious, the app provides a warning on the screen, helping users make an informed choice about whether to answer or ignore the call.
“We’ve built Scam Detection to protect your privacy and ensure you’re always in control of your data. Scam Detection is off by default, and you can decide whether you want to activate it for future calls,” said Google.

“At any time, you can turn it off for all calls in the Phone app Settings, or during a particular call. The AI detection model and processing are fully on-device, which means that no conversation audio or transcription is stored on the device, sent to Google servers, or retrievable after the call,” the company added.
Pixel 9 devices benefit from the advanced Gemini Nano chip for scam detection, while Pixel 6, 7, and 8a models utilize other state-of-the-art on-device machine learning models. This feature underscores Google’s commitment to user privacy, as all processing occurs directly on the device, with no data being transferred to external servers.
