Spain Braces for Another Round of Catastrophic Flooding

MADRID, November 13, 2024 – Spain is once again on high alert as the threat of severe flooding looms, with the Spanish weather service issuing red alerts for the regions of Tarragona and Malaga. Barely two weeks after floods claimed over 200 lives, the country now faces the prospect of another deluge with forecasts predicting up to 180mm of rain within the next 12 hours.

In response, emergency services are mobilizing to evacuate approximately 3,000 residents from the most vulnerable areas. Schools in these regions have suspended classes to ensure the safety of students.

The incoming weather system is not just bringing heavy rain; it’s also expected to cause high winds and turbulent sea conditions along the coastlines, leading to the closure of ports and the suspension of various transport services. Events across the affected regions are being postponed as a precaution.

The Spanish authorities, already criticized for their handling of the previous disaster, are urging the public to take necessary precautions. They warn that the conditions associated with the DANA weather system, known for its intense and prolonged rainfall, could deteriorate further. The public is advised to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel, and comply with safety directives.
