A brutal attack on a bar in Queretaro’s historic district left 25 people dead and at least seven injured on Saturday, according to local authorities.
Gunmen armed with long weapons stormed the Los Cantaritos bar, opening fire on patrons. Juan Luis Ferrusca, head of Queretaro’s public security department, stated that emergency services arrived promptly, confirming the involvement of four assailants who arrived in a pickup truck.
“Inside, 19 people were reported dead and at least seven more were injured so far,” Ferrusca said in a video statement shared on social media.
Authorities have detained one suspect, and the vehicle used in the attack was later found abandoned and set ablaze, Ferrusca added.
Queretaro, often regarded as one of Mexico’s safer cities, has now joined the growing list of regions affected by the country’s escalating violence. Since 2006, over 450,000 people have been murdered in Mexico, much of it linked to drug cartels and organized crime.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the community, raising fresh concerns about security in areas previously seen as havens from the country’s spiraling violence.
