Bodo Plans Enhanced Security for Europa League Match Against Maccabi Tel-Aviv

In Amsterdam, unrest erupted after Maccabi's 5-0 loss to Ajax, leading to clashes that hospitalized at least five people.

Bodø, Norway: The Norwegian city of Bodo will see heightened security measures in preparation for the upcoming Europa League game between Bodo/Glimt and Israel’s Maccabi Tel-Aviv on January 23. Local authorities have announced that security will be bolstered due to recent incidents involving Maccabi supporters in Amsterdam.

In Amsterdam, unrest erupted after Maccabi’s 5-0 loss to Ajax, leading to clashes that hospitalized at least five people. Anti-Israeli slogans were reportedly shouted as groups attacked Maccabi fans, while some Maccabi supporters allegedly chanted anti-Arab phrases and removed Palestinian flags from residences. In response, Amsterdam banned demonstrations for three days and deployed riot police to manage the tension.

Ahead of the match in Norway, the Nordland Police District has committed to an increased police presence and advanced security protocols. “More resources are being allocated by the police not only in terms of visible street presence but also through intelligence efforts before the match,” Deputy Chief of Staff Cathrin Nerhus Lewin stated to Norwegian broadcaster NRK. She also emphasized that police will coordinate with the football clubs to mitigate any potential risks.

Adding to the security considerations, Maccabi Tel-Aviv’s away game against Besiktas on November 28 is already set to be played at a neutral venue yet to be confirmed.
