Iraq Challenges Israel at the UN Over Violations of Sovereignty in Airstrikes Against Iran

"Iran has the right and the duty to defend itself against foreign acts of aggression," the Iranian foreign ministry stated, referencing Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

Baghdad: Iraq announced on Monday (October 28) that it has formally filed a complaint with the United Nations (UN) regarding the Israeli military’s use of its airspace to carry out attacks on Iran over the weekend. According to reports, the complaint letter was sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council.

In a statement, Iraqi government spokesperson Bassim Alawadi condemned Israel’s “blatant violation of Iraq’s airspace and sovereignty by using Iraqi airspace to carry out an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran on October 26.”

Israeli Airstrikes Target Iran

On Saturday (October 26), the Israeli military conducted strikes against Iran in response to a missile attack on Israel that occurred on October 1. The Israeli military reported that three waves of jets targeted missile factories and other sites near Tehran and in western Iran. Tehran claimed to have lost four soldiers in the attack and stated that the strikes resulted in limited damage. Iran further asserted its right and obligation to defend itself against such actions.

Iran Issues Warning to Israel: ‘Bitter Consequences’ Await Following Attack

On the same day, the chief commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards issued a stark warning to Israel, stating it would face “bitter consequences” for its attacks on Iranian military sites. Guards chief Hossein Salami, quoted by the Tasnim news agency, claimed that Israel had “failed to achieve its ominous goals” with its air raids on Saturday.

Salami characterized the Israeli attack as indicative of “miscalculation and helplessness,” highlighting Israel’s ongoing struggles against Tehran-aligned militants in Gaza and Lebanon.
