New Assassination Attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico Thwarted at Dukla Pass

Prime Minister Fico, speaking to local media, hinted that his unwavering stance on Ukraine might be fueling these attacks.

In a startling continuation of violence directed towards Slovakia’s political leadership, Prime Minister Robert Fico narrowly escaped another assassination attempt during a commemoration event for the 80th anniversary of the Carpathian-Dukla military operation at Dukla Pass.

Security personnel intercepted an individual carrying a fully loaded pistol, preventing what could have been a tragic outcome. This incident comes after a previous assassination attempt in May 2024 where Fico was gravely injured when he was shot multiple times, suffering wounds to his abdomen and limbs.

Prime Minister Fico, speaking to local media, hinted that his unwavering stance on Ukraine might be fueling these attacks. His policies, which include a more critical view towards supporting Ukraine in the ongoing conflict, have been a point of contention, potentially inciting strong opposition from certain quarters.

This latest attempt underscores the deep-seated political divisions within Slovakia, reflecting broader European tensions over foreign policy, especially concerning Ukraine. Fico’s survival of yet another attack has raised concerns about political violence and the safety of public figures in Slovakia.

Security measures at public events involving high-profile figures are expected to be reviewed in light of these repeated threats. The incident at Dukla Pass not only endangers Fico but also signals a troubling trend of political violence that could have implications for the stability of Slovak democracy.
