Cairo: In the early hours of Saturday, an Israeli airstrike struck military sites in central and southern Syria, as reported by Syria’s state news agency, SANA. According to SANA, Syrian air defense forces responded to missiles launched “from the direction of the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights and Lebanese territories,” intercepting and downing several of them.
Shortly before the reported airstrike, explosions were heard near Syria’s capital, Damascus, suggesting the scale of the attack could be extensive. These latest actions follow Israel’s longstanding policy of targeting Iranian-affiliated military positions within Syria, with an increase in such operations since Hamas’s October 7 assault on Israeli soil.
In parallel developments, Israel also launched strikes targeting Iranian military assets early Saturday, with Israeli military sources confirming actions against military installations. Iranian media simultaneously reported multiple explosions, underscoring the escalating regional tensions.
