Mexico City: A violent clash between rival criminal groups in Mexico’s Guerrero state on Thursday left 16 people dead, marking a severe escalation in the country’s ongoing battle with cartel-related violence.
Authorities reported the shootout began around 5 a.m. in Guerrero’s mountainous, rural region, an area that has become a dangerous battleground as criminal groups compete for control.
Local police forces responding to the incident faced heavy gunfire. Two officers lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries but are now in stable condition after receiving medical treatment, the Mexican Defense Ministry confirmed.

National Guard units stationed nearby quickly mobilized to provide assistance, though three military officers were also injured in the crossfire. The 14 other casualties are believed to be members of the cartels involved, and authorities made 11 arrests on-site.
