Iran Warns US of Consequences if Israel Retaliates with Military Strike

The tension escalated after President Biden, when questioned by a reporter, confirmed his understanding of Israel’s response timeline following an Iranian missile barrage on October 1.

New York: Iran has delivered a stern warning to the United States, asserting that it would bear “full responsibility” if Israel were to launch a retaliatory strike against the Islamic Republic. The warning follows comments made by US President Joe Biden, suggesting his awareness of Israel’s plans to respond to recent escalations.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, voiced Iran’s concerns in a formal letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Swiss presidency of the UN Security Council. Iravani pointed to Biden’s remarks as deeply troubling, implying US complicity in Israel’s potential actions against Iran.

The tension escalated after President Biden, when questioned by a reporter, confirmed his understanding of Israel’s response timeline following an Iranian missile barrage on October 1. The missile attack, which consisted of approximately 200 ballistic missiles, was launched by Iran as retaliation for the killing of senior figures from Hamas, Hezbollah, and an Iranian Revolutionary Guard general.

Israel, already engaged in conflict with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, has vowed to seek retribution against Iran for the missile strikes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly communicated to President Biden his intention to strike Iran’s military facilities, while refraining from targeting its nuclear or oil infrastructure.

In his letter, Iravani sharply criticized Biden’s statements, describing them as “profoundly alarming and provocative.” He argued that the US president’s words signaled “tacit approval and explicit support for Israel’s unlawful military aggression against Iran.”

He further warned, “The United States will bear full responsibility for its role in instigating, inciting, and enabling any acts of aggression by Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran, in flagrant violation of the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.”
